Short story: Rain

Claire Fuller

photo-88

The rain beats down on the roof of the Morris Minor. The old wipers can’t cut through the blur fast enough, and Flora leans forward where the headlights show the road disappearing beneath the car in black and white.

The first thump comes as she is passing the unlit supermarket. Then something hits the windscreen, swooshed away before she can even flinch. And then another. And another. There are things on the road – small, thrashing, distressed. Flora swerves, and the short beams of light the car throws out shows her hundreds more silvery creatures falling and flapping. Fish.

Joking Bad

As Heather's World Turns

This has turned into late night talk show week on the blog, which is helpful for me since I haven’t had much time for anything else. Kimmel and Fallon have really been killing it this week, which makes me even more excited for their showdown come 2014. It’s a friendly competition, but they are both so creative that I think the real winner will be the viewer.

Fallon has done a great job with parodies in the past; I quite enjoyed his versions of Downton Abbey (“Downton Sixbey”) and Game of Thrones (“Game of Desks”). So I knew when he announced that they were taking on Breaking Bad that it would be fantastic. And I was right.

Check out “Joking Bad,” chock full of fun cameos:

All this awesomeness on late night makes me wonder if I should be checking in on Conan more regularly…

Talk like a Pirate Day

As Heather's World Turns

Ahoy mateys! Today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day. There are a ton of weird “holidays” out there – Ferris Wheel Day (February 14th), National Doughnut Day (first Friday in June), Groundhog Day – but this one is by far my favorite, even if I don’t really participate, since it is just so ridiculous that it is genius. Plus who doesn’t like pirates (obviously excluding those who they are pirating)? Before vampires, werewolves and zombies became popular, pirates were the popular thing. I’m guilty of getting in on this trend; I used to have a miniature cannon on my desk at work and would occasionally launch plastic cannon balls at people who came into my office and annoyed me. Yup – these are the same people that just promoted me. I must not have “shot” the wrong people.

Talk Like a Pirate Day is the brainchild…

American Horror Story: Coven

As Heather's World Turns

It’s that time of year again when FX rolls out the nuttiest in the history of television – American Horror Story. This year’s installment is focused on witches (hence the subtitle, Coven) and once again creator Ryan Murphy has brought back some familiar faces in completely different roles. I really dig this model; it allows the show to tell one story since they have a defined timeline and prevents the series from getting stale. It is constantly reinventing itself, though it does run the risk of not being able to top itself. Thankfully there are still plenty of sacred cows for Murphy to mess with and he hasn’t shown signs of running out of ideas.

Last year my pals and I had a season premiere viewing party and I did a running diary of our thoughts and reactions as we were watching. This year, our schedules didn’t line up…
